The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)

Description

You may not realise it, but chartered accountants are involved in many aspects of your life. Picture yourself on the bus to school or college, listening to your mp3 player – have you ever considered that accountants have had an impact on everything from the development of your mp3 player to the production of the music you’re listening to?

The ACA from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) is one of the most prestigious business and finance qualifications. Training as a chartered accountant will develop the skills and knowledge you will need for a successful career in business. From working for a high street chartered accountants to a global record label such as EMI.

Training as an ACA – What’s involved?

When training as an ACA you will work for one of our authorised training offices on a training contract. Training offices are organisations that are authorised to employ and train ACA students. Your employer will pay for your training and pay you a competitive salary. When you’re not in the classroom you will be getting invaluable real life work experience, which all counts towards your ACA.

Employers train school leavers as well as graduates, so if university is not for you, training as an ACA is still an option. You can start to train for the ACA directly after your A-levels which will take five years to complete.

Also, you can go on to study the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians qualification) then Fast-Track on to study the ACA. The AAT-ACA Fast-Track takes just four years to complete. Meaning you take that exciting step on to the career ladder sooner than your friends, with more experience and responsibility earlier in your career.

And if university is your next step, then training as an ACA takes three years after you graduate. You may be surprised to know that you don’t need to have a maths, business or finance degree. In fact you can study any degree subject you want.

It’s good grades and developed employability skills such as communication, team work and decision making, the employers are looking for; the ACA training will teach you the rest.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry requirements will vary across training offices. The requirements will depend on the size and location of the company. The ICAEW suggest the following as a minimum:

• three GCSEs at C grade or above (including an A or B in maths and English)

• two A-levels in any subject and 240 UCAS tariff score or above

• a first or 2:1 in any degree discipline (or equivalent).
