Reading and Leeds festivals 2007 – the countdown!

Not long now until it’s time to don your black eyeliner and stockings (that’s you as well, girls) and tramp off to a field to leap up and down to some seriously unpretty music.

Let’s be honest, the weather has given the festival season a bit of a kicking this year – Glastonbury and V were soaked, after all – so we’re all hoping that the final fling of the year will be blessed with some sunshine.

In case it isn’t, here are some wet weather tips:

 - carry a poncho with you. They’re light and compact, and you can keep stuff dry underneath them while still getting easy access to it (like your pint, if you’re over 18 – don’t want any more water getting into it, right?)
 - wellies. Wellies, wellies, wellies. Nothing else will do if you really want to avoid soaking feet, they’re easy to take off and clean, and if you have to wade through the toilets…well, would you want to be wearing Converse? Trench-foot, anyone?
 - wear layers. Rather than one thick jumper, have lots of thin layers. They’ll keep you warmer and you can remove and replace the top ones if they get damp.
 - bin bags. Sit on them. And use them as Batcapes in the evening when that sort of thing starts to seem like a good idea.
 - don’t let stuff touch the inside walls of your tent. If the inner walls touch the outer ones, your tent will leak. Soggy sleeping bags aren’t such a good look (and neither is hypothermia from sleeping in them).
 - mud baths. Don’t, you’ll regret it. But if you absolutely must, at least send us pics so we can have a giggle. Best hippo impression wins a prize.

And now, some festival news:

 - there’s going to be all sorts of entertainment late into the night this year, so you don’t have to spend the evenings burning stuff once the bands have stopped. Highlights include this curiosity on Thursday night on the Leeds Alternative Stage: ‘a quartet will revise the old silent movie tradition of a pianist accompanying films, by improvising a soundtrack of intense metal to accompany horror shorts.’ We’re there. At Reading, there's talk of a 'Disco Shed'. What, you need more encouragement than that? Get down there!
