This week’s reviews are brought to you by Giorgina, the splendid work experience person. Enjoy!SINGLESThe Flaming Lips
The W.A.N.D (Warner Bros. Records)Interesting. Different. Okayish. And just when you think it’s getting a bit samely (which it does, trust us) the track ends. Woo hoo! A quick end to the pain. With its multi-layered technofied pop melody it’s inventive, but they said that about Bounty chocolates and hardly anyone likes them. It’s the sort of thing to make you go ‘Hmmm’ – starts off good, then gets boring, then ends. But at least the CD cover is very pretty.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Tell Me Baby (Warner Bros. Records)In typical Chili Pepper style this single keeps you hooked from the minute you press play. Tracks like this showcase the talents that make the Chilis one of the best bands around - it hits all the right buttons, at the right time, in the right way. From Flea’s skilfully unique bass playing to the inspiring chorus, ‘Tell Me Baby’ is captivating all the way through. Definitely worth parting with your hard earned cash for!
Gnarls Barkley
Smiley Faces (Warner Bros . Records)
This captivating tune will perk you up from the devastating disappointment that is (sometimes) real life. You can’t not dance to this, or at least sway. With its extraordinary fusion of oldish soulful sounds and modern day techno, this uplifting track is right up there with the longest running number 1 single since 1994,‘Crazy’. And we guarantee you’ll be singing the inventive and memorable lyrics in the shower for days after listening…
Morning Runner
OceansA very moving and emotional ballad. Mathew Greener has a choirboy voice and a distinctive style. Does etc. like it? Nope. Although it’s yet another very nice chill out, easy listening song some of the lyrics are totally weird! Go team up with Daniel Powter, Greener. (But then again, two wrongs don’t make a right.)
She Wants Revenge
Tear You ApartThis reminds us of ‘Take on me’ by Aha, oddly enough. ‘Tear you apart’ is totally amazing: dominating drum intro, unrelenting bass, mind-blowing lyrics…this is a song for anybody with any taste in music. It makes us think of a softer, likable Marilyn Manson. Justin Warfield and Adam Bravin are pure genius with this new wave revivification!
ALBUMS
Van Hunt
On The Jungle Floor EEESHK! This album is almost as bad as his fashion sense. We thought things were getting better by ‘Ride, Ride, Ride,’ then the singing ruined it. Yes, the raw feel is very different from the high-gloss R&B of today but we still want to get a truck, with lots of heavy people in it, to drive over this album several times. etc. hated it so much we got one of the harder of the (camp) boys here to stamp on it. Lots.
James Morrison
UndiscoveredThis guy has an unforgettable voice. Add that to emotional, truthful lyrics and bluesy folk-soul, and you get an album that’s actually, genuinely good. Opener ‘Under the influence’ makes fantastic use of a piano and a violin, while ‘This Letter’ is blues with a twist; Morrison is as far from those fake, wannabe singers as can be. Gentlemen, a hint: ‘You give me something’ is a great song to send your girlfriends if you want them to love you forever. You’ve got everything in this album from smoochy love songs to ‘just been dumped’ tracks. ‘Undiscovered’ is top notch!
